Performance - It’s Cold and There’s no Music

SE: It’s Cold and There’s No Music är ett poetiskt verk om robotar, ensamhet och vårt behov av tröst i en värld vi inte vet vart den är på väg styrd av värden vi inte tror på. Två dansare på scen använder motion capture-dräkt för att interagera med en animerad artificiell intelligens. Dräktens data livestreamas till projektioner så att dansarna kan turas om att vara den, prata med den, förklara vad det är att vara människa med alla verktyg de har som konstnärer. Tillsammans skapar de en hyllning till det som är omöjligt att förklara och som vi inte vet exakt vad det är förrän vi förlorat det.

ENG: It’s Cold and There’s No Music is a poetic work about robots, loneliness and our need for consolation in a world we don’t know where it’s going, guided by values we don’t believe in. Two dancers on stage use a motion-capture suit to interact with an animated artificial intelligence. The data from the suit is live streamed onto projections and the dancers take turns being it, talking to it, and explaining to it what it means to be human. Together they create a celebration of that which cannot be explained and only truly known once it’s lost.

Workshop - Skinship

SE: Deltagare i online-lajvet Skinship kommer att spela utomjordiska och sensoriska varelser som läser av intelligens genom beröring och andra sinnen. Deltagare kommer att ledas genom uppvärmningar och somatiska övningar för att förankra sig och öppna upp sin förnimmelse. Genom att skapa och spela enkla fiktiva karaktärer och ett ramverk tillsammans, kommer vi att utforska vår familjära värld på ett icke-familjärt sätt och skapa nya översinnliga världar tillsammans. Deltagare kommer att samlas mot slutet för att dela erfarenheter och diskutera teman såsom mänskliga/icke-mänskliga interaktioner och teknologier och utforska hur vi definierar (och skulle kunna omdefiniera) intelligens.

Ingen tidigare erfarenhet av larp eller somatik krävs. Workshopen leds på engelska men kan spelas på olika språk. Den kommer att vara ljud-baserad och ter sig mindre lämpligt för de med nedsatt hörfunktion. Workshopen kommer att hållas vid två tillfällen; 1.12.2020 & 3.12.2020 mellan 13:00 - 15:00 varje dag. Lajvet på torsdagen följs av en presentation av Susan Ploetz där hon kommer prata om sitt arbete och hur hon använder sig av somatik och lajv via HRI (Human-Robot Interaction), samt utforska frågor kring Artificiell Intelligens.

ENG: Participants in the online larp Skinship will play alien, sensing creatures that detect intelligence through touch and other senses. Participants will be led through warm ups and somatic exercises that ground them in their senses and open up their fields of perception. Through simple fictional characters and framing, we will explore our familiar world in an unfamiliar way and create an ethereal new role together. Participants will have time at the end to share experiences and discuss themes of human/non-human interactions including and explore how we define (and could re-define) intelligence.

No experience in larping or sensory awareness techniques required. The experience will be facilitated in English, but play is open to being multilingual. Play will be audio focused, so may not be suitable for those that have hearing impairments. Please contact in advance if you have any special requirements, questions or concerns. Susan Ploetz (US/DE) is an artist-researcher working with somatics, theory, writing, performance, simulation and live action role plays (larping) in different configurations. Her work deals with the overlapping spaces of soma and technos; she uses imagination, magical materiality and protocol to induce emancipatory emotive dissonances, incommensurability, and perceptual expansion. She explores live simulation, game design and play as relational story-making spaces that allow for individual agency while creating decentralized community. She has presented work at institutions such as the Berliner Festspiele, Oude Kerk, Sophiensaele, ABC Art Fair, Rupert (Vilnius), Documenta 13, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, Aoyama Gakuin University (Tokyo), and Performa. She has been a guest artist/teacher, lectured or given workshops at Universität der Kunst (Berlin), Gerrit Reitveld Academie, Piet Zwart institute, The DAAD, The Pervasive Media Studio (Bristol), and SUNY Buffalo.

The workshop will run twice: 1.12.2020 & 3.12.2020 between 13:00 - 15:00 each day. The larp on Thursday, December 3 will be followed by a presentation by Susan Ploetz on her work and especially how she has used somatic and larp approaches with HRI (Human-Robot Interaction) and also to explore issues around Artificial Intelligence.

The Constitution of
the AI Party

SE: AI-Partiet Finland skickar deras officiella AI-representant till The AI Party Pep Rally! I detta immersiva och deltagarinriktade performance erbjuds publiken en möjlighet att diskutera politik med AI-representanten, men inte utan konsekvenser...

Perfomancet är en del av “The Constitiution of The AI Party (FI)” som spelades i Helsingfors 2017 och kommer att vara omarbetat för The AI Party Pep Rally av Bombina Bombast.

Performancet har fått stöd av Nordic Culture Fund, Arts Promotion Centre Finland och Mad House Helsinki.

ENG: The AI Party Finland is sending their official AI representative to The AI Party Pep Rally. In this immersive and participatory performance the audience has a chance to argue politics with the AI representative and embrace the consequences.

The performance is a part of an immersive performance ‘The Constitution of The AI Party (FI)’ realized in Helsinki 2017 which will be adapted for The AI Party Pep Rally by Bombina Bombast.

Workshop - Revet

SE: Under denna workshop med Revet Scenkonst kommer de att berätta om och visa material från sitt arbete med en AI-skriven pjäs - från insamling av material till färdig uppsättning. Efteråt kommer ni som deltar att få scener från rå-materialet att läsa i mindre grupper och, om en vill, få läsa upp inför de andra deltagarna. Vi kommer diskutera upplevelsen av att läsa och lyssna på texter skrivna av en dator - vad för känslor och tankar väcker de i oss? Vilka situationer kan vi se? Hur tar en sig an material som är skrivet helt utan egentlig världslig kontext, utan eventuella medvetna val att ta hänsyn till? Förstår vi någonting alls egentligen av vad datorn skrivit?

Revet är ett scenkonstkollektiv som startades i Göteborg 2015. Sedan dess har gruppen varit aktiv i Göteborg och Malmö samt med turnerande verksamhet.

Revet arbetar med utforskande scenkonst och har aldrig velat välja varken nisch, uttryck eller form. Därför har dockteater, improvisation, postdramatik, poesi, fars, Vloggar, dans, sång, performance och Euripides alla fått samsas i gruppens scenrum. Nykomlingen i stallet: Artificiell Intelligens.

ENG: During this workshop, Revet will introduce you to the process and work behind their newly written play Nattygsbord, based on text generated by an AI. You will be given scenes from the play to read and progress in smaller groups. We will discuss the experience of reading and listening to AI-generated text, what thoughts and emotions does it evoke? What kind of situations can we identify? How does one relate to material deriving from a worldmaking which is not defined by the human condition? Can we make sense of it? The workshop will be in Swedish. 

Revet is an experimental performance collective, rejecting definition by form or expression. Revet has worked with and through puppet theatre, improvisation, poetry, vlogging, vocals and Euripides. Artificial Intelligence is their latest addition/addiction.

DÆMON

SE: DÆMON (Jahsiri Asabi-Shakir) använder lyrik som ett sätt att uttrycka ett spektrum av känslor, referenser, abstrakta idéer och kommentera samhällsfrågor. Med inspiration hämtad från personliga upplevelser från sin uppväxt i Oakland blir DÆMONs berättelser intensiva och levande. DÆMON jobbar över genrerna som en protest emot det algoritmstyrda konsumtionen av musik och identitet. DÆMONs DJ-set består av ett brett ljudlandskap där nytt, ospelat material ofta dyker upp.

Till avslutningsceremonin kommer DÆMON att framföra ett dj-set med fokus på AI. DÆMON kommer att använda sig av en 10 minuter lång ljudtolkning av texten ”Host” som är skriven av Matilda Tjäder och Nikhil Vettukattil, samt ett flertal ljudupptagningar, uppläsningar och tal som kretsar kring AI som samplats, loopas och mixas.

ENG: DÆMON (Jahsiri Asabi-Shakir) uses lyricism as a means to express a full spectrum of emotions, references, abstract ideas, and social commentary. Drawing from personal experiences growing up in Oakland for inspiration in a dissociative, non-committal manner, DÆMON illustrates vivid imagery through storytelling and an array of literary devices. DÆMON works within a cornucopia of genres with a brand-defying approach as a protest to the algorithmic consumption of music and identity. DÆMON’s DJ sets consist of a wide range of club soundscapes and often feature his upcoming unreleased content.

For the closing ceremony DÆMON will be performing a dj set of recent projects adjacent to the AI concept. DÆMON will be using a 10 minute sonic interpretation of the text "Host" written by Matilda Tjäder & Nikhil Vettukattil along with various field recordings, passages of readings and speeches surrounding AI and adjacent subject matters to loop and mix.

DJ Set - Josefine Hellström

SE: Det är kontrasterna som drabbar dig. Skarpa kanter som känns mjuka, likt skir spets mot sprucken asfalt. För Josefine Hellström är melankoli och eufori inte motsatser - de är oskiljaktiga. Med en klassisk bakgrund inom musik, är Josefine mer intresserad av tonalitet och temperament än kategoriseringar av ljud. Detta gör henne till en mångsidig producent och musiker, och hon blandar olika typer av techno med house, UK pass och råa breakbeats. Gammalt eller nytt, snabbt eller långsamt - det spelar absolut ingen roll så länge musiken har skapats med passion, själ och energi. Josefines första skiva ”Water Cave EP (HMWL)”, som släpptes 2016, togs väl emot och spelades mycket på klubbar och festivaler runt om i Europa. Svensk Radio nominerade den till och med till årets bästa techno. På senare tid har Josefine samarbetat med en dansk producent, DJ och god vän, Ena Cosovic. Deras första EP ”Pisces Monas” släpptes i februari på John Osborns skivbolag DRED och deras andra EP ”Saturn Retrograde”, släpptes på skivbolaget Night Tide i april.

ENG: It’s the contrasts that get you. Sharp edges soft to the touch, like translucent lace on sun-cracked asphalt. For Josefine Hellström, melancholy and euphoria are not opposites — they're inseparable. Coming from a classical background, Josefine is more interested in tonality and temperament than classifications of sounds. This makes her a highly versatile producer and DJ, mixing different textures of techno with bouncy house, earth-shattering UK bass and rough breakbeats. Old or new, fast or slow - it doesn’t matter as long as it’s music made with passion, soul and energy. Josefine Hellström’s first recordWater Cave EP(HMWL), released in 2016, was very well received and got tons of spins at clubs and festivals around Europe. Swedish Radio even shortlisted it as ’Best techno of the year’. Lately she has been collaborating with Danish producer, DJ and good friend Ena Cosovic. Their first EP Pisces Moonwas released in February on John Osborn’s label DRED and the second one, Saturn Retrograde, in April on Eluize’s label Night Tide. She is currently working on a solo EP as well as a contribution to the first VA of her collective/label Alleycat Anthem.

From Terminator to Roomba

From Terminator to Roomba: the robot occupies a special place in our cultural repository. On the one hand, it represents cutting-edge scientific research; on the other hand, the robot is a figure of fiction and science fiction. The nascent field of cultural robotics aims to critically address this tension, and show how it reflects on the strategies of communicating science.

During my talk I will make an effort to explain why we are facing some terminological obstacles when researching AI and robots (also referred to as embodied AI), taking into account the history of this technology and cultural context. The approach I am using in my research aims to avoid a dualistic “man vs. machine” narrative - prevalent in the Western popular culture.

Bojana Romic (Ph.D.) is Marie Skłodowska Curie ’Seal of Excellence’ Fellow, at K3, School of Arts and Communication, Malmö University. Romic is a member of MEDEA, a Research Lab for Collaborative Media, Design, and Public Engagement, Malmö University. She is currently working on the research project ”The Robot as a Technocultural Icon” (2019-2021), funded by The Strategy Group for EU-Coordination, Sweden.
